What is an ATS, how does it impact hiring, and what can you do about it

What is an ATS, how does it impact hiring, and what can you do about itWhat is an ATS, how does it impact hiring, and what can you do about itIf youve applied for jobs online in the past while, theres a good chance your resume was scanned by an applicant tracking ordnungsprinzip (ATS) before it made it to the eyes of a recruiter.Research from Jobscan reports that 98.2% of Fortune500 companies use a type of ATS during their hiring process.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard titelbilding Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreSo if your resume isnt ATS optimized, an automated ordnungsprinzip might toss you from consideration for your dream job before a hiring manager at the company even reviews your application. What is an ATS?Corporate job postings receive, on average, 250 applications, and hiring managers do leid have time to review that many resumes, cover letters, and work samples. To streamline this process, companies use appli cant tracking systems to scan resumes for keywords, filter out applications that dont display relevant job experience, and automatically rank candidates.Additionally, during the hiring process, an ATS can be used to send automated emails to potential hires (like that We received your application email you often get), track your interview process, and prompt your successful applicants for electronic signatures. These systems are designed with HR teams and recruiters in mind so they can quickly hire quality candidates, but that doesnt mean you, the applicant, have to be at a disadvantage. If you learn how to optimize your resume for ATS, your application doesnt have to be one of the 75% that get rejected before ever landing in front of a human. How to write an ATS-compliant resumeIf youre currently on the job hunt or youre just giving your resume an annual update, its time to use ATS best practices. Here are some easy ways you can keep both an ATS and hiring managers in mind when submit ting your next applicationUse keywords on your resume. Keywords are not the same as buzzwords. Keywords indicate the soft and hard skills you have developed through education and professional experience, while buzzwords like hard worker and go-getter wont impress an ATS or a recruiter. Here are some examples of hard and soft skills you may want to include (as relevant to the job youre applying for and your experience)Hard skillsComputer programingEditingForeign language skillsDegrees and certificates youve earnedMachine operationTyping speedSoft skillsCommunicationTime managementLeadershipPatienceFlexibilityTeamworkMake sure the keywords you include are actual skills you possess that you can back up with examples from previous jobs, rather than just words you think will sound impressive.Adjust keywords for the position youre applying for.You probably wont have to write an entirely new resume and cover letter for every job you apply for, but you do need to adjust the keywords you use b ased on the position youre going after. A good test is to open your application and the job description side by side. Go through the job description carefully and pick out specific skills the company is seeking for the position.Assuming you have those skills, use the same keywords in your resume and cover letter that you found in the job description. Those are usually the same keywords that an applicant tracking system will be looking for when scanning your resume, and probably the words a hiring manager will be looking for when they get ahold of your resume too.Submit your resume in the correct format. Many people choose to submit their resumes, cover letters, and other application materials as PDFs. This is a great option because it maintains the format of your resume that you probably spent a long time perfecting. You might also consider submitting a resume as a Word document or in a plain text file to be safe, but however you submit, just be sure you are using one of the listed f ormats. If you dont, your application could be chucked from the pile because the ATS cant read it.Bonus tip Dont put any key information, like your contact info, in the header or footer. Most ATS wont read this information, and those essential details could get cut.Use a standard resume design.A standard design doesnt mean you cant add a little personality, but unless you are giving your resume directly to a hiring manager, leave off the graphs and funky designs. An ATS is not designed to read those and wont be able to register the skills you are trying to display using a non-traditional chart or image. Instead, focus on creating a clean design with a hierarchical listing of your skills, including a chronological professional history and relevant skills and accomplishments. Once your application makes it past the ATS, your recruiter will be happy to be able to quickly review your resume for key information. You can make sure your resume design will be easily read by an ATS by using a resume reviewer like this one. It uses an automated system to review your resume for content, style, and formatting. While it might feel like a pain to optimize your job application materials for every position you apply for, youll be happy you did when you land a job you love. Even if you have all the right skills and qualifications, if you dont know how to translate that for an applicant tracking system, your application wont make it far. Take the time now to make your resume and other application materials ATS compliant, and you can focus on preparing for calls and interviews instead of wondering whether your resume made the cut.Brian Anderson is an HR copywriter, with work exploring the intersection between employee engagement, total rewards, and HR software. Use of Technology in Criminal Justice

Use of Technology in Criminal JusticeUse of Technology in Criminal JusticeMost police departments across the country now supply their officers with some version of an in-car computer, often called a mobile data terminal. Some are even using mobile phone technology. Police dispatchers use a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) software. Evidence technicians and custodians use automated inventory management ordnungsprinzips to keep track of their evidence property rooms. Video Recording New digital video recording technology has made it affordable and practical to provide more officers with cameras, either in their car or carried on their uniform. These videos are then able to be used as evidence in court or a complaint investigation. Many systems allow for automatic wireless download when the car pulls into the station, reducing officer downtime and ensuring vital evidentiary data is recorded and logged as soon as possible. In-Car Computers Across the nation, patrol officers are usin g their computers to perform everyday functions. Arrest reports are increasingly required to be typed. Traffic citations, once handwritten, are produced electronically while a printer inside the patrol car supplies a copy for the violator. Even time reporting and payroll is often handled online. In many cases, not only are these reports produced electronically, but they are also transmitted electronically to reduce paper and increase efficiency. Rapid Identification Driver information and history are instantly accessible to officers on besucherzahlen stops. In several states online databases provide quick access to driver license photos, allowing officers to verify names of people they have stopped in the event the violator has forgotten his driver license or identification card. Rapid ID systems are also making their way into the hands of law enforcement personnel. These tools allow officers to obtain biometric information from a subject, usually a fingerprintand have it compar ed to the FBIs criminal database. If the subject has any prior arrests, the fingerprints will show a match and instantly provide the identity of the person the officer is dealing with. It also provides information regarding history and outstanding warrants. Evidence Property Reporting Some agencies have moved their entire evidence property system online. Officers collect evidence and then log it into the online system before placing it into the appropriate facility. Specialized evidence technicians use the system to track and monitor the evidence and get it where it needs to go, either to the lab for analysis, to the state or district attorneys office, or into the property room for safekeeping. Computer Aided Dispatch Years ago, dispatchers used pen and paper and punch cards to keep track of case numbers, dispatch officers and log calls for service and activity. Now, sophisticated dispatch software is used. In many departments, GPS units integrated into officers cars or comp uters report their position to their dispatch centers. This allows dispatchers to determine who is closer to a call for service, helping to ensure that citizens are assisted as soon as possible. Also, the dispatch centers can record every phone call and radio transmission and cross-reference them to corresponding case numbers and officer activity. Case Management Criminology professionals working within the court system can take advantage of the automated case tracking systems. These online systems allow attorneys, judges, clerks and law enforcement personnel to gain quick access to important case and docket information. Prosecutors and public defenders can access arrest affidavits and witness information almost instantly as it is input, allowing for more time to prepare for cases.

Ageism in the Workplace 2018

Ageism in the Workplace 2018Ageism in the Workplace 2018Ageism is a common term used to describe age discrimination in the workplace. Ageism is defined by Dictionary.com as a tendency to regard older persons as debilitated, unworthy of attention, or unsuitable for employment.Do you agree with the above definition? From my experience, I have noticed quite the opposite to be true. Ageism at work stems from the belief that younger, fresher, candidates can contribute more than older, experienced, candidates. I will explain why this is not true below.According to AARP.org, one in five workers in the U.S. (33 million) is age 55 or older. 64% of workers say they have seen or experienced age discrimination at work. 58% of adults believe discrimination against age begins among workers in their 50s. Personally, I have witnessed age discrimination begin among workers in their 40s. Why should you care? Unlike other forms of discrimination, age discrimination will almost certainly affect your lif e at some point in the future.Signs of Discrimination Against AgeHave you ever been told, You are overqualified for the job, You are too senior for this job or You would not fit in with the companys culture? More often than not this is legal code for, You are too old for the job. If you have been told to trim down your background, remove work from your resume, and dumb down your experience, chances are someone is trying to help you appear younger. These are just Find My Profession who can help combat these hiring objections based on age.Advantages of Hiring Experienced EmployeesThere are a plethora of reasons why hiring older employees is beneficial. For starters, older employees have more experience. They have gone through the trenches, made their mistakes, and learned from them. A company full of young employees is bound to make many of the same mistakes that these experienced employees have made. This can be a huge expense financially as well as time invested fixing these mistake s.Experienced employees can act as mentors. Steve Jobs put it nicely when he said, It doesnt make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do. Young companies/founders should not be intimidated by older employees. Instead, they should utilize their experience, knowledge, and professionalism that has been accumulated over the years.Age in Relation to Salary RequirementsMany companies think that the higher the age, the higher the salary they must pay. I am here to tell you that this is not always the case. And even when it is true, you cannot compare apples and oranges.First things first, do not rule a candidate out because you assume they will require a higher salary. Ask them If they tell you that $125,000 is their salary requirements and that is perfectly within your budget, do not rule them out because you are afraid they will leave for a better opportunity.Second, stop being such a stickler on the salary. If someone brings an extra ten years of experience to the table, do they deserve an extra $10,000? Absolutely The experience they will bring and mistakes they will prevent you from making will pay for itself in the first month.Ageism in the Workplace ConclusionIt is a new year. 2018 is here and everyone can play a part in preventing age discrimination at work. Hiring managers, make a conscious decision to value experienced employees accurately. I can tell you from experience that hiring older employees is the way to go. Check out my viral LinkedIn post (15 million+ views, 10,000+ comments, and 175,000+ likes) on ageism in the workplace.

5 Things Art Taught Me About Being a CEO

5 Things Art Taught Me About Being a CEO As the CEO of peer-to-peer investing platform Fast Invest, I use my training in business and knowledge of technology to make the company a success. Before I was a tech CEO, however, I was an artist. I have a degree in fine arts from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, and you maybe surprised to learn my experience in art has been very useful to my work as a CEO.Art degrees may binnenseem like they dont prepare students for the realities of modern business, but my time at the Academy of Arts taught me invaluable lessons that I use on a daily basis, like the following1. Be ObservantIn order to recreate something in paint, you need to be truly familiar with your subject. Simply painting a tree trunk with some leaves and flowers isnt enough to create something beautiful. You need to pay attention to the way the light falls on the bark, the way the blossoms rustle in the wind, and the contrast between the treetops and the sky.Likewise, being observant pays off in the startup world. The best way to make your business stand out is to observe your surroundings. Observe the market, observe the systems in place, and observe your competitors. Identify what makes your business a necessary part of the economy and better than the competition. If you are able to truly see and understand your surroundings, your startup will be much better for it.2. Dont Be Afraid of FailureIt took many tries before I painted something of which I was proud. In order to create a masterpiece, you have to fail first and by fail, I mean really fail.As a young artist, I would sometimes get angry if what I painted didnt look like what I intended. At the time, I didnt understand the importance of failure. I hadnt yet realized that with each draft of a painting, or each attempted work of art, I would be able to learn from the experience and apply what I learned to the next draft. Failure improved my ultimate results.Fast Invest has gro wn tremendously in the past few years, but not every idea we have is a good one. When something doesnt work out as planned, Im able to look at what happened and apply those lessons to future projects.3. Be PatientIn the fast-moving fintech world, it may seem like everything is rushed. Quick expand our operations Ah we need to integrate new technology Move fasterBut rushing isnt a recipe for success at all, even if it seems like technological innovations occur at an ever-accelerating pace. Good work takes a long time, both in art and in business. I learned from my years as an artist to be patient with both the process and with analyzing results. If you rush, your finished product may be sloppy.4. Be DisciplinedAccording to TV shows like Silicon Valley, tech CEOs are always sitting around in sweatpants, only working when they feel like it. The reality is much different. I work 10-12 hours a day, every day. It is my job to know about every aspect of the company, to truly understand w hat each rolle isdoing and what each projectis. This can be exhausting and difficult work, but I have committed to it nonetheless. My discipline is a skill that I learned from being an artist.I wasnt alwaysin the mood to paint, but I needed to practice and put in the hours to create something special.5. Dont Be Afraid to Color Outside the LinesIn art school, we studied the masters of the form. Without an appreciation for the best artists of the past, I wouldnt have been able to create the art I wanted to create. The same principle applies in technology and business We can learn best practices by studying successful entrepreneurs and CEOs and the decisions theyve made. However, we cant be limited by what has been done in the past. We need to break the mold and find new ways of doing things. Currently, Fast Invest is working extensively with blockchain software, making it useful and accessible to people who previously werent using the technology. Working with new technology and expandin g previously established markets is an important part of being a successful innovator.Simona Vaitkune is the CEO of Fast Invest.

3 Little Secrets to the CEO of Apples Success

3 Little Secrets to the CEO of Apples Success3 Little Secrets to the CEO of Apples SuccessApple is one of the biggest companies in the world. Love it or hate it, no one can argue that this company isnt run well. So, how does Tim Cook, the man at the helm, do it?Its still a bit of a mystery- we are talking about a company known for being secretive, after all- but the public recently got some insight into Cooks process when he sat down for a surprisingly frank interview with Charlie Rose and shared some secrets to success. Here are a few that are particularly steal-worthy.1. Prioritize DiversityCook is quick to acknowledge that he hardly runs Apple on his own. In fact, hes incredibly thoughtful about who he surrounds himself with. The trick, according to Cook, is to prioritize diversity when building a team. The most important thing is to pick people around you that arent like you, that complement you... I believe in diversity with a capital D. And thats diversity in thought and divers ity any way you want to measure it. And so the people that surround me are not like me. They have skills that I dont have And then we collectively, to get things done, work together as a teamWe dont always agree on everything. But we have great respect for one another, and we trust one another, and we complement one another. And that makes it all work.2. Block Out the NoiseWhen it comes to running a multi-billion-dollar company, or any company really, theres a lot of different things you could be focusing on. So Cook makes a point to differentiate what is important and what he considers to be just noise. One great skill I have is blocking noise. And so, I typically read and listen to things that are deep and challenging and intellectual in nature- not the noise. I think if you get caught up in the noise as a CEO, youre going to be a terrible CEO. Because theres so much noise out there in the world that everybodys on the sidelines saying what you should do, shouldnt do, et cetera.3. Apologize When You Mess UpEven the CEO of Apple, a company known for its perfectionism and absurd attention to detail, thinks its okay to make mistakes. Whats important is the way you respond to a mistake. Sometimes, when youre running fast, you slip and you fall. And I think the best thing you can do is get back up and say, Im sorry. And you try to remedy the situation, and you work like hell to make the product right. If youre probably never making a mistake, youre probably not doing enough. The best part of this little window into the mind of Tim Cook is that you dont have to be the CEO of Apple to use his strategies for success in your life. Think about who you have on your team and what noise you could be cutting from your life. Give yourself permission to be ambitious and make mistakes. Clearly, this kind of thinking can get your pretty far in life. Photo courtesy of SGM / Shutterstock.

Even if you have not had the greatest experience at the company, a brief thank you is often much appreciated.Offer to Help During the Transition (Optional)Providing assistance during the transition is not required but is a common courtesy to extend. However, if your personal circumstances will prevent you from helping out in any way, you do not need to include this. Email Writing Tips You can also choose to send your resignation notice by email. It is especially a good idea if you have to alert your employer to your resignation as soon as possible.
